BioClub Propagation: From Tokyo to Seoul
Since my last talk on March 19, "The Joys and Complications of Creating Living Musical Instruments," which focused more on my personal background and practice, this time I'd like to discuss my short but meaningful history with BioClub Tokyo, its members, and how this experience, in many ways, has spurred a new open, creative biology lab in Seoul.
Unlike my previous talk, I'd like to make this one more of a discussion. I'll begin with a brief introduction to Seoul’s bio lab, our personnel, and its current offerings, and then explore how we can collaborate to create a united Asian network of open bioclubs.
About Mikael
Psients is a scientist-turned-artist exploring the intersection of biology, sound, and music. His work centers on developing and performing alongside a new kind of 'living' instruments to meditate on posthumanism, multi-agency intelligence, and our relationships with manipulated living systems.
In the search to link scientific innovation with musical comprehensibility, his work spans techniques including biotechnology, sound design, and live performance. Psients received training as a neuroscientist and was previously involved in biomedical research, focusing on the development of next-generation pharmaceuticals (electric "electroceutical" medicines) and synthetic biology. During his time as a researcher, Psients began pursuing a semi-professional career in electronic music. Since transitioning fully to art, he has continued and expanded his musical endeavors, having produced four singles and one EP, while regularly touring around Asia.
