Rage: My Skin as a Radar

During the residency my main focus was the common skin condition neurodermatitis as it's the main theme for my short film „Cyborgs are jealous of me“. The film explores my relation to the chronic condition throughout my life and how it together with my view changed with the years.

The chronic conditions cause lies within the intestinal flora and mirrors allergies, bodily imbalance and levels of stress directly onto the surface of the body: the skin. For a bit over a year I had a wound on my left knuckle that wouldn’t close not matter what i tried. For my project in the BioClub Tokyo I collected skin from this wound which I would film magnified through the microscope, while exposing it to substances that I am allergic to and ones that heal or support healing. For example glycerin and common day aggressors like fresh lemon juice, soapy water or disinfectant. The visible result of the exposed tissue was mostly a slight hydration and smoothing of ridges or the bursting of blood cell membranes when exposed to ethanol. I expected to only see few results because of the usage of dead wound tissue. What I didn’t expect was the wound itself starting to close and fully heal right after the start of my engagement with the project and my in depth confrontation with the matter.
