Art & Science Collaborations in Circular Bio-nutrient Economy
In this talk, interdisciplinary artist and educator Ella Ziegler presents her artistic research at the intersection of art, science, and ecology. Focusing on urgent environmental issues such as the global nutrient crisis, she demonstrates how art-science collaborations can open new perspectives on sustainability and regenerative futures.
Drawing from her lecture performances and talks — developed in collaboration with engineers and environmental scientists—Ziegler engages audiences in a participatory format that makes scientific knowledge about nutrient cycles both accessible and actionable.
Through Ziegler's humorous, participatory, and research-based formats, Ziegler invites audiences to rethink the human role in ecological systems and explores how art can act as a transformative interface between science, society, and sustainability.
About Ella
I am an artist, curator, and educator working at the intersection of art, science, and ecology. My practice integrates socio-cultural projects, performances, interactive installations and publications, focusing on socially and ecologically engaged topics such as sustainability, circular bio-nutrient economy, and resource use. Since 2020, I collaborate with scientists like Prof. Dr. Johannes Lehmann (Cornell University) and ingenieur Prof. Dr. Jörg Felmeden (University of Applied Sciences OWL), combining artistic methods with scientific and technological research.
I have curated and led several socio-cultural and interdisciplinary projects, including Salon Universitas (2014–2017) at Kassel University, a platform for exchange between art, science, and society. Through my work, I seek to foster ecological awareness, strengthen community engagement, and contribute to societal transformation by using art as a catalyst for dialogue and change.
