Should Scientists be CEOs? The blurred line between research and enterprise

In a world where research is chronically underfunded and publishing is paywalled, is the next generation of scientists mean to start companies instead of write papers? Science has always aspired to exist beyond material motives - to understand, protect and restore. But today’s scientists, especially those in conservation, face the realities of an economic system that demands tangible, profitable outcomes. Can we find a way for conservation coexist with capitalism?

Let’s talk about the evolving role of scientists in modern society, through the lens of marine conservation, and how their relationship with industry, technology, and commercialisation is changing. What lessons can we learn to help science fund itself without eroding its principles?

About Charlie Chen

I'm a marine scientist and divemaster from the UK, currently based in Sydney, Australia. I've approached marine science from the persepctive of an academic, a scientific divemaster, a publisher, and more recently as an investor in my current role interning with Ocean Impact Organisation, a non-profit organisation aiming to support impactful startups in the ocean industry.

My love for marine science encompasses the full range; from a fascination with the biology of coral reefs, to a desire to support the concious, sustainable growth of the blue economy.
